10:30-11:30 AM - 2014 Midterms Recap
We start the day with a look back at the midterms. What lessons can we take away from the heavy losses suffered by Democrats at the state and national level? How can municipal Democrats take action on what matters to voters? DNC Political Director Raul Alvillar will lead our morning discussion on how to take action after the midterms. Pollster and consultant Fred Yang (Hart Research Associates) will then join us to provide his analysis on the issues that mattered in November.
11:30-12:30 PM - ALEC and Local Control
ALEC is now working at the municipal level to subvert our Democratic values. With statewide preemption efforts and national conservative organizations working to strip municipalities of their agency, what can local Democrats do to fight for their ability to act on constituents' needs? Kim Haddow (Haddow Communications) and Molly Murphy (Anzalone Liszt Grove Research) will fill in the blanks on preemption, and present what you can do to counter these incursions against local control.
12:30-1:45 PM - Lunch Panel on Community Policing
Cities are taking new steps to build stronger relationships between law enforcement and the community. Join DMO for a panel discussion exploring community policing, and how local officials can address the needs of both law enforcement and the public. Panelists include Joe Buscaino (Los Angeles City Council, former police officer) and messaging expert John Rowley (Fletcher Rowley), who will provide tips on how to communicate in a crisis.
2:00-3:00 PM - Income Inequality and Inclusive Growth
What are the practical strategies to raise the minimum wage, combat income inequality, and promote more inclusive local economies? Join Anna Chu, Director of the Middle-Out Economics project at the Center for American Progress to discuss action local Democrats can take to develop municipal economies that work for everyone.
3:00-6:00 PM - Nationbuilder Website Training
The DMO site is moving to Nationbuilder! Nationbuilder is one of the most innovative campaign and political website hosts, tailoring their pages to fit modern electoral needs. Sit down with Nationbuilder and web designer Mosaic Strategies Group to explore the resources and features available on the new DMO page. These tools will help you better engage with DMO, as well as your constituents.
