DMO is now forming a Council of Policy Leaders (see Council of Policy Leaders Statement of Purpose below), led by DMO Board Member Mayor David Mayer of Gloucester, NJ. One of our founding members of the Council is Jill Duson, a city council member from Portland Maine who twice served as mayor of her city, and who brings a depth and breadth of experience to the Council that we know will help us take our work to great heights.
Council Member Duson grew up in poverty, the daughter of a polio survivor. She watched her mother participate in a rent strike to improve their living conditions. She watched strength in the face of adversity, and she became that strength. One of five children, and the only one of her siblings to graduate from high school, Duson went on to earn a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and a Certificate in Senior Executives in State & Local Government from the Kennedy School of Government.
She currently serves as the Manger of the Compliance Division for the Maine Human Rights Commission. For six years she served at the state's Bureau of Rehabilitation Services, an agency with a $24 million budget and 150 employees. In that position, she helped erase a multi-million dollar deficit and an 11-month waiting period for services.
Jill Duson's experience extends beyond government service. She owned her own consulting business, and served for almost 15 years for Central Maine Power and Northern Utilities in various management positions. She was repeatedly promoted, and we can see why.
Jill Duson's resume defines her Core skills and competencies as: Executive management of the full continuum of program/project management activities, including setting goals and objectives, long range strategic planning, establishing metrics, securing funding, developing and monitoring budgets, overseeing staffing and coaching high performing teams, accountability for driving results, building stakeholder and community partnerships, managing government relations and coordinating internal/external communications.
We can't wait for her to put those to work helping us build and develop our Council of Policy Leaders, and we are proud to name Portland Maine City Council Member Jill Duson our DMO of the Month.
