Council Member Luis A. Quintana has dedicated years of public service to the residents of Newark. He was elected to his first term as council member-at-large in the June 1994 run-off election. He is the first person of Hispanic descent to be elected to an at-large position in the Newark Municipal Council. Quintana was voted council president on September 19, 2013. He became acting mayor on October 31, 2013, and was sworn in on November 4, 2013, assuming the unexpired term of the previous Newark Mayor. He is the first Latino mayor of Newark, the total population of which is one-third Latino.
