DMO wants to make sure that you have up to date information on the national issues that impact your constituents. Last week's testimony of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Brett Kavanaugh has provided new information on the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Below I have included three critical points of concern that have been raised by the DNC, newspapers of record, and regular Americans.
We encourage you to call your Senators and weigh in with your view and those of your constituents, as we hope you do with every national issue that effects us at the local level. It matters when a Senator hears from their mayors, council members, and other local officials who are closest to the people.
Democratic Municipal Officials
Kavanaugh has conducted himself with a temperament unfit for that of a Supreme Court Justice. This nomination is a lifetime appointment that our country will have to live with for possibly decades. It is imperative that we have level-headed, prudent, legal mind who we are confident will work in the best interest of country.
Compare Brett Kavanaugh's tears and outbursts to the cool and collected Hillary Clinton during her hours of Benghazi hearings. Or to the terrified but respectful Dr. Ford during her own Senate examination. Between Ford and Kavanaugh, only one comported themselves with the dispassion of a federal judge.
During his opening remarks, Kavanaugh described the allegations against him as a result of a planned Democratic conspiracy, and as a revenge plot driven by the Clintons. Can such a wildly partisan mindset ever rule fairly in the politically charged cases brought before the Supreme Court?
Perhaps most notable was his response to Senator Klobuchar. When asked in plain language if he had ever blacked out from drinking, he repeatedly demanded to know the same of the Senator. This behavior is not acceptable from someone being questioned by a US Senator, and would demean the Supreme Court if Kavanaugh were to conduct himself similarly as a Justice.
The Bottom Line - Whether he is disrespecting female Senators, imagining conspiracies against himself, or breaking under the pressure of public accountability, Judge Kavanaugh lacks the temperament to serve as a Supreme Court Justice.
Kavanaugh has almost certainly lied under oath regarding the meaning of multiple items on his calendar, which this article goes into detail listing.
During his testimony, Kavanaugh claimed that “I never attended a gathering like the one Dr. Ford describes in her allegation.” yet his meticulous calendar entries verify that he did in fact attend parties with small gatherings of friends, including Mark Judge and another individual identified by Ford.
He has stated multiples times during these hearings that it was legal for him to drink in Maryland when he was in high school, when at no time did the law allow then 17-year old Kavanaugh to drink.
Kavanaugh also claimed under oath that he never blacked out from drinking. While none of us can know his internal perspective, multiple Yale classmates described him as "stumbling drunk where he could not have rational control over his actions or clear recollection of them", a man who was “frequently incoherently drunk”, and as "belligerent and aggressive".
The Bottom Line - There's credible evidence that Kavanaugh has lied under oath numerous times. While Republican pundits defend this behavior as an embarrassed man saving face about his youth, the fact remains that lying under oath reveals a blatant and unacceptable disregard for the law.
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Deborah Ramirez, Julie Swetnick, and a fourth anonymous woman have come forward accusing Kavanaugh of sexual assault.
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford - Who says a drunken Kavanaugh assaulted her at a party.
Deborah Ramirez - Who says Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a college party.
Julie Swetnick - Who issued a sworn declaration that Kavanaugh frequently touched women without their consent, spiked drinks at parties with drugs and grain alcohol, participated in the rapes of the incapacitated women, and that she herself was raped at one such party.
The Bottom Line - These disturbing allegations depict a consistent pattern of behavior in which Kavanaugh used alcohol and the informal setting of a party to prey on the women around him. The man they describe has no place being honored with a Supreme Court appointment, much less deciding the future of women's legal rights.
