NC DEMOCRATIC MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS RENEW CALL FOR HB 2 FULL REPEAL; CONDEMN TRANSFER OF FUNDS FROM DISASTER RELIEF TO HB 2 DEFENSE
Charlotte, NC, July 6, 2016 -
The North Carolina Chapter of Democratic Municipal Officials (NC DMO) today renewed its call for the full repeal of HB 2, calling the legislation “a welcome wagon for bigotry”, and condemned the NC General Assembly’s transfer of $500,000 from disaster relief funds to the legal costs of defending the legislation.
“After seeing the ongoing damage to North Carolina’s economy and reputation, the General Assembly had the chance to reconsider and repeal HB 2, which has become a welcome wagon for bigotry against our state’s LGBT citizens,” said Dan Besse, NC DMO chapter chair and Winston-Salem City Council Member. “Instead, Republicans in the legislature and governor’s office compounded their bad judgment by transferring a half-million dollars from our state’s disaster relief fund to cover the legal expenses of defending this unconstitutional bill. Their action makes the point that HB 2 is a disaster for our state.”
“HB 2 has generated fear, stripped citizens of basic rights, and damaged our economy,” added LaWana Mayfield, Charlotte City Council Member and member of the NC DMO board of directors.
NC DMO emphasized that the damages from HB 2 go far beyond its well-known bathroom provisions. HB 2 eliminated all state and local protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in employment and public accommodations. It also forbids local governments from requiring contractors working on public projects to pay a living wage to their employees.
Read NC DMO’s original resolution calling for HB 2 repeal. Of the resolution’s provisions, only the section referring to elimination of the private right of action for wrongful termination has been addressed. All other harmful provisions of HB 2 remain in effect.
