July 2013

Meet our DMO of the Month, Bill Peduto is going places!

Democratic Municipal Officials is proud to provide a community that helps our members accede to wider office. July’s DMO of the Month is Bill Peduto, one such Democrat who is stepping up to implement his ideas on a larger scale. Bill has served as Council Member for Pittsburgh’s East End neighborhoods since 2001, while also investing serious hours in volunteer work and community service organizations. Bill, like many DMO leaders, is one of those officials who leave us wondering when he has time to sleep. Certainly not after his recent primary win, as he is expected to serve as Pittsburgh’s next mayor.

Bill’s long journey to where he is now has seen him build a lifetime of experience, from busboy and sidewalk painter to running a political consulting business and serving as a political director for Governor Mark Singel. His extensive work history might be best exemplified by finally receiving his diploma from Penn State in 2007. At the time he was the only member of the Pittsburgh City Council to hold a bachelor’s degree, resolving that he needed to matriculate to better address the issues facing the city.

A reformer, Bill has strengthened the city ethics code, passed laws to require lobbyist disclosure and registration, and brought an end to no-bid contracts.

In addition to championing a system that works for his constituents, Bill is also dedicated to revitalizing the city’s economy. Bill has ensured $2 billion in redevelopment funds for Pittsburgh’s 8th District. He also wrote and pushed for a new budget containing a fiscally responsible five year plan. Since then, a $90 million deficit turned into a $50 million surplus. Bill supports investment in the green energy revolution, especially when new technologies can bring sustainable job growth to his community.

Bill’s commitment to his city extends beyond his seat on the City Council. Council Member Peduto works with the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, promoting the development of home grown artists and local culture. He also oversees sports land development with the Stadium Authority, and is a Board Member of Carnegie Museums and Libraries.

Bill spends the rest of his waking hours as a volunteer, working to stop breast cancer with NCJW Komen Foundation and helping to cure AIDS with the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force AIDS Walk. Other recipients of his good works include the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and the ZOA Anti-Intolerance Program for Public and Parochial Schools. If his repertoire is tiring you out, take a break by catching Bill on ice, as he plays with Pittsburgh’s Celebrity Hockey Team. Or you can Peddle, Paddle, and Peduto with Bill and Venture Outdoors, as they join forces in nature to teach open air history lessons.

Technology plays a big role in Bill’s vision for improving Pittsburgh. That’s why he teamed up with Carnegie Mellon to co-create iBurgh, a mobile app for local government. With improvements in technology, Bill sees the opportunity to better connect constituents with their government services. You can also find Bill raising money for charity online by VJ-ing internet videos with his Pedutube project.

With such a full calendar, it’s no wonder the Democratic Leadership Council put Peduto into the "100 to Watch” Democrats list. Don’t forget, Bill is also the Pennsylvania Co-Chair for DMO! Bill is a perfect example of a Democrat willing to take their ingenuity and commitment to their constituents to the next level.  We here at Democratic Municipal Officials are sure Bill will bring the same big ideas and work ethic to the office of Mayor, and wish him the best of luck on November 5th.
